Scholarship for 2 PhD Students
The Singapore Synchrotron Light Source (SSLS) is a university-level Research Institute at the National University of Singapore (NUS). It is dedicated to generating and exploiting synchrotron radiation for research and development purposes and provides services for customers including research institutions, industry and institutions of public interest. At present, synchrotron radiation is produced by a compact 700 MeV electron storage ring with two 4.5 T superconducting dipoles. Five beamlines and experimental stations are in operation comprising a micro/nanomanufacturing facility (LiMiNT), a phase contrast imaging and tomography beamline (PCIT), a soft X-ray facility for surface, interface, and nanostructure science (SINS), a hard X-ray facility for diffraction, absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence (XDD) and an infrared spectro/microscopy facility (ISMI). A further beamline for electron beam diagnostics will be ready in 2006.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering (CEE/FOE) at NUS and SSLS have been engaged in the development and application of modern imaging techniques involving X-ray photons and electrons.

In the framework of a recent three-year grant awarded by Ministry of Education (MOE) to CEE and SSLS, applications are invited for 2 PhD Scholarships to work on both, experimental and theoretical, aspects of high resolution imaging systems with electrons and X-rays. One project will focus on the development and applications of an X-ray Electron Emission Microscope (XEEM) with a spatial and temporal resolution of sub 100 nm and sub 100 micro-seconds, respectively, and the corresponding retrieval methods for refractive contrast imaging and will be performed at the PCIT beamline at SSLS. The second project aims at the development of Time-of-Flight Electron Emission Microscopy (TOFEEM) utilizing the time structure of the X-ray beam at SSLS combined with fast electronic gating and the use of advanced methods including Lie algebra technique to correct the electron optics in order to reach the sub 10 nm spatial resolution range.

The theses will be supervised jointly by Profs. Anjam Khursheed (CEE), Herbert O. Moser (SSLS and Physics) and Dr Marian Cholewa (SSLS).

Criteria:
Candidates should possess

  • a first honours Bachelor or MSc degree in physics or electrical engineering,
  • a strong motivation to do research work, and
  • good planning, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills together with an excellent command of English (at least a score of 237 for Computer-Based TOEFL required for overseas candidates).

Experience with some of the imaging techniques mentioned above would be helpful.

SSLS/CEE offer:

  • a three-year PhD Scholarship of ca. S$21,500 per year and
  • an interesting and challenging work among a young and highly motivated team.
This offer will be open until a suitable candidate has been found. The announcement will then be withdrawn from SSLS’ and NUS’ websites. Please send your application with a CV, resume of professional achievements, copies of supporting documents (educational certificates, testimonials etc) and a recent photograph to:
