Chemistry is a pillar of our economy and our knowledge domain. Today, the manufacturing sector contributed close to a quarter to our economy, and it is underpinned by three major industries - chemical, biomedical and electronic - which are anchored by Chemistry. With the establishment of Jurong Island and Biopolis dedicated to the chemical and biochemical industries, the influence of Chemistry in our workforce is rapidly becoming a characteristic of the Singapore economy.
The National Chemistry Week aims to raise awareness of the importance of Chemistry as the central science by highlighting the applications of Chemistry in the 21st Century. It is an outreach programme organised by Singapore National Institute of Chemistry, in partnership with A*STAR Science & Engineering Research Council, A*STAR Institute of Chemical & Engineering Sciences, Institute of Technical Education, Millennia Institute, Ministry of Education, National University of Singapore, National University of Singapore High School, Nanyang Technological University, Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Science Centre Singapore, St Andrew's Junior College, Temasek Polytechnic, Victoria Junior College and Yishun Junior College.
