WORKSHOP 1: THE CHEMISTRY OF COLORFUL CANDIES
Time : 9 - 11am & 1 - 3pm
Venue : East Zone S&T Centre, Synthese Lab
Audience : Upper Secondary Students
Fee : Free of charge

Sugar-coated chocolate candies are a mouth-watering treat! Great, blue, orange, yellow.....the list goes on. This lab will introduce students to the food dyes which are responsible for many of these colours. Students will have the chance to extract, separate and examine the dyes used in common brands of candies using techniques such as thin layer chromatography and UV-visible spectroscopy.

WORKSHOP 2: GOING BANANAS! - THE CHEMISTRY OF FLAVOURS
Time : 9 - 1030am & 11 - 1230pm & 2 - 330pm
Venue : Chemistry Labs
Audience : Upper Secondary Students
Fee : Free of charge

From fruits to ice-cream, natural or artificial it's all about flavours! Participants will be introduced to the chemicals behind great-tasting foods. What are the common classes of chemicals that make our food taste so good or so pungent? In particular, esters made from small acids and alcohols generally smell good. Several of these esters are the key component of aromas of fruits. The distinctive aroma that distinguishes one fruit from another is simply dependent on the exact combination of carboxylic acid and alcohol, as you will discover through hands-on experiments.

WORKSHOP 3: SNACKS - RECIPE FOR A HORIZONTALLY DEVELOPED BODY?
Time : 9 - 1030am & 11 - 1230pm & 2 - 330pm
Venue : Lab 20 and Lab 20A
Audience : Upper Sec Students
Fee : Free of charge

The workshops will introduce the different components of food and the exact components in snacks which make us fat. The students will learn how to read the nutritional label and be aware of the 'understand' methods some companies use to make their products look healthier than they really are. Students will perform some hands-on experiments and even get to do some food tasting!

WORKSHOP 4: CHEMISTRY WONDERLAND
Time : 9 - 12pm
Venue : Chemistry Labs
Audience : Sec 1 students
Fee : Free of charge
Each school is only allowed to send one team of 4 students.

Objective: The workshop proposed is affectionately called Chemistry Wonderland. As the name implies, the aim of this workshop is to allow students to develop a sense of wonder towards chemistry, hence sparking off an interest in this beautiful science.

Structure: This workshop will be carried out with 6 different teams of students competing through station games. Stations will be set up around the school compound and the teams will be led around. There will be 2 teams at a station at any one time. The final two teams with the highest accumulated scores will enter the final buzzer round.

WORKSHOP 5: A CHEMISTRY ODYSSEY
Time : 9 - 1030am & 11 - 1230pm & 2 - 330pm
Venue : East Zone S&T Centre, Synapse Lab
Audience : Upper Pri & Lower Sec
Fee : Free of charge

Embark on this odyssey of discovery that delves into the myriad applications of Chemistry through a series of fun-filled experiments. Explore the wondrous beauty of crystals by making attractive and shiny "jade" pieces from sodium thiosulphate or be a chemical horticulturist by creating your very own crystal garden. Ever wondered about the chemistry behind the toys we play with? Be Santa's elves for one day as you learn to make bouncing balls, party glow sticks and balloons filled with carbon dioxide gas. Finally, find out how global warming can be reduced as you get to operate miniature cars powered by hydrogen gaas.
