Natural Chemistry – Reactions with Air, Mineral Water and Orange Juice By Professor F Ekkehardt Hahn, University of Münster

In conjunction with the opening of National Chemistry Week 2009 (NCW ’09), Prof F. E. Hahn from University of Munster will be giving a public lecture on how the perception of chemistry has changed over the years. Prof Hahn has been publishing actively in the field of chemistry since early 80s and has a H-index of 30. Join us in this astonishing presentation where he will demonstrate using various ‘chemicals’ and chemical reactions to explain his points.

Abstract:
Over the years perception of the role of chemistry in science has changed. Several decades ago society considered chemists as problem solvers. They discover new materials and medicines; improve health and living standards, and many more. That has not changed today, but the perception of chemistry in the media has. Today, chemists and their work are charged for polluting the environment, causing allergic reactions, food poisoning, synthesis of illegal drugs and designer drugs, chemical weapons just to name a few. Many are suspicious of the word ‘chemicals’ as much as they are with chemist and chemistry. Many believe that products of the chemical industry are dangerous to the environment and their own health. A closer inspection reveals that these convictions or preoccupations are based on fragmentary information and wrong conclusions due to poor understanding of chemistry. Who could imagine life without medicines, dyes, fertilizers, soap, flavours or water?

In this lecture, some of these misconceptions will be presented and discussed. The presentation aims to demonstrate that we all live in a chemical environment made up of over 100 chemical elements. We cannot escape from this chemical environment but we can and must direct efforts towards its protection while utilizing it. Chemistry is the science of choice to enable mankind to achieve this target.
