International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)

Singapore National Institute of Chemistry (SNIC) is announced to be an official National Adhering Organization (NAO) in the 50th IUPAC Council meeting that is held in Paris on 11-12 July 2019. As a NAO in IUPAC, it creates many opportunities for all chemist of Singapore to engage with IUPAC. The next World Chemistry Conference in 2025 was voted to be held in Malaysia, 2023 will be in the Netherlands and 2021 in Montreal Canada.

The delegation from Singapore in that assembly representing SNIC were Dr Peter Nagler (middle, Executive Director Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences), Prof. Dr. Alex van Herk (right, Principal Scientists ICES) and Fun Man Fung MSc (left, Assistant Director Education, NUS, Dept of Chemistry).

  • Chemical Education Committee

For IUPAC, Mr. Fung Fun Man will represent SNIC to serve on the Chemical Education committee as the national representative and young observer to bring more Asian young chemists to this network and to benefit from the exchanges, sharing and mentorships.

Mr Fung Fun Man, first and foremost Chemistry educator at the NUS is passionate about making an impact on youths around the world through education and mentorship. As a beneficiary of inspiring mentors who have helped him along the way in his academic and professional career, he strongly believes in paying it forward and nurturing the next generation of leaders and thinkers.

As the Assistant Director of Education at the Institute for Application of Learning Sciences and Education Technology (ALSET) at NUS, an institute dedicated to educational research and innovation, Fun Man designs curriculum aimed at strengthening students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, thereby promoting effective learning and decision making. His strong interest in leveraging on technology to promote learning has led him to utilize innovative tools in the classroom, such as the GoPro camera to film IPOV videos, and adopting a 360-degree camera and drone to visualize environmental fieldwork. These and other pedagogical innovations are also captured in Fun Man’s authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications in the domain Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Chemical Education. Recently, Fun Man also served as member of the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) Steering Committee from 2014 to 2018.

  • International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN)

IYCN is an organization that is affiliated to IUPAC. IYCN aims is to connect all the younger chemist around the world and hope to develop into not only a network of young chemist but also a lasting system to foster growth and mentorship in chemistry. Recently, SNIC has nominated both Tan Hui Ru and Chng Wei Heng from NUS as IYCN delegates and it is approved by IYCN. Both of them are currently pursuing their PhDs at NUS Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering. Mr. Fung Fun Man is also the new secretary of International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN) for 2 years which is affiliated to IUPAC.
